Uniklinikum Erlangen has used Radiometer’s 1st Automatic, the first fully automated end-to-end blood gas testing solution, to improve their workflow by reducing manual steps and avoiding the risk of patient-sample mix ups.

In the Department of Anesthesiology at Erlangen University Hospital, approximately 200 blood gas tests are performed per day, across three ICUs and 42 beds.
Dr. Andreas Wehrfritz, Senior Physician and Anesthesiologist, highlights how Radiometer's automated solutions have helped enhance efficiency and patient safety at the ICU at Uniklinikum Erlangen.

Enhancing operator safety through specialized blood gas samplers

While patient safety is crucial, protecting medical operators from exposure to blood is also critical.

“With the vented safeTIPCAP on the Radiometer syringes, we are able to expel air from the sample, then have a sealed sample, and avoid contact with blood,” explains Stefanie Schmidt, PhD student responsible for four ABL800 FLEX blood gas analyzers.

With up to 73,000 blood gas analyses annually, removing this risk of exposure safeguards operators.

Preventing patient-sample mix ups through bedside registration

Traditionally, blood gas testing followed a multi-step process. Several steps, such as patient identification, proper sample labeling, and manually mixing the sample to ensure quality, are critical for patient safety. However, as Dr. Fabian Seibert, Assistant Doctor in the ICU in the Department of Anesthesiology notes, “It’s a complex and error-prone workflow with a high potential for preanalytical mistakes.”

With the 1st Automatic solution, operators can conveniently scan barcodes at the bedside to instantly link patient, sample, and operator information. This ensures accurate identification and traceability from the very beginning of the workflow.

Dr. Fabian Seibert, Assistant Doctor in the Anesthesiology Department, emphasizes how 1st Automatic has helped minimizing preanalytical errors and ensuring accurate patient identification.

The Radiometer solution is a tight ecosystem and a smooth workflow.

After 15 years, Erlangen University Hospital is still using Radiometer’s 1st Automatic blood gas solution because it enables a streamlined workflow and helps to ensure the right patient receives the right treatment at the right time.

We can save a lot of time because everything works automatically, allowing us to concentrate on quality patient care. Radiometer's blood gas solution is user-friendly and allows us complete confidence in our blood testing capabilities, as well as ensuring patient safety.

By scanning the pre-barcoded safePICO syringe, accurate linkage of patient and sample data is ensured.
