At Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, blood gas testing plays a critical role in guiding urgent clinical decisions.

Jonathan Harris, POCT Director at the clinic, leads the effort to align blood gas testing with ISO 15189:2022 and CAP accreditation standards.

By implementing Radiometer’s 1st Automatic end‑to‑end blood gas testing solution, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has improved preanalytical quality, reduced errors, and achieved key POCT performance indicators focused on patient safety, and compliance.

Centralizing POCT to improve patient safety and compliance

For Jonathan Harris, patient identification compliance is the most critical KPI.

With Radiometer’s 1st Automatic solution, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi introduced electronic patient and sample registration directly at the bedside.

By scanning the patient’s ID, operator ID, and pre‑barcoded safePICO Aspirator, the workflow provides three points of identification, helping minimize patient sample mix‑ups—an especially important consideration in a region where patients may have similar names.

It eliminates the manual labeling errors we’ve seen previously. Manual labeling workflows led to shortcuts, workarounds, and non-compliance.

1st Automatic standardizes the blood gas testing workflow

Once collected, samples are automatically mixed in the mixing unit of the ABL90 FLEX PLUS analyzer using the magnetic mixing ball in the safePICO Aspirator syringe. This standardizes sample mixing and removes operator‑to‑operator variability.

Results are transferred directly to patient medical records through the hospital’s EMR system. According to Harris, automation has transformed the blood gas testing workflow by delivering consistent results, fewer repeat tests, and improved turnaround time monitoring.

The 1st Automatic solution has delivered measurable improvements across our blood gas testing and transformed how we manage blood. It’s a unique solution.
