We had an absolutely brilliant training team from Radiometer. They did an excellent job of planning who to train and when. They quickly realized that staff in the ICU or in A&E could not leave those areas, so the team managed to do the training directly on those wards, even if space was limited. They were very flexible.”

Smooth blood gas equipment upgrade for University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

In 2019, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) upgraded its Radiometer ABL800 FLEX blood gas analyzers and acquired 27 Radiometer ABL90 FLEX PLUS blood gas analyzers to be installed at 3 sites: Southampton General Hospital, Princess Anne Hospital and the outlying Lymington New Forest Hospital.

Ensuring a smooth transition to the new blood gas analyzers through training and post-implementation support was a key factor for Deborah Donovan, Section Manager for the Critical Care Laboratory at the UHS. According to Deborah, the Radiometer training team were very flexible and did an excellent job of planning training activities.

Radiometer training team exceeded the UHS training requirements substantially

Thanks to excellent communication, planning and the flexibility to accommodate the Trust’s needs, Deborah and the Radiometer training team exceeded training requirements substantially.

Before the upgrade, the Trust asked that at least 50% of staff across the 3 sites should receive training within a 10-week period; eventually, 70% of staff were trained within the allocated timeframe.

Deborah says, “I give them a 10 out of 10!”

New blood gas analyzers and point-of-care IT solution help save time

Commenting on the new analyzers, Deborah explains: “The ABL90 FLEX PLUS is very hands-off and time saving. With the installation of the ABL90 FLEX PLUS blood gas analyzers, maintenance was also greatly reduced, so that freed up our time to continue to improve our service rather than getting the analyzers up and running each day.”

Regarding Radiometer’s AQURE point-of-care IT solution, Deborah says: “I could not live without AQURE. We’ve got it on all the time on our PCs, so whenever there’s an issue we can instantly see whether we need to go to the analyzer or whether it’s something that we can fix remotely via the network.

Wise words from a satisfied customer when considering upgrading your blood gas analysis capabilities

To other hospitals looking to upgrade their blood gas analysis capabilities, Deborah recommends: “When you put the tender out, it’s important to get the equipment in to see what will work best for you. But remember it’s not just about the machines; it’s also thinking about what you need in the background: a good company, training, support, servicing etc.”

She adds, “My experience of Radiometer is that they certainly tick all the boxes. They’ll actually go above and beyond to try and solve your problem which, for me, has been brilliant.”
