When you need fast results in the ICU – video transcript

Dr Jan Brocke, Chief physician, Segeberger Kliniken, Germany

My name is Dr Jan Brocke. I'm the chief physician in the department of early rehabilitation and neurological intensive care.

We have a neurological weaning unit with a large number of patients on mechanical ventilation.

Blood gas analysis is important to us in order to appropriately manage the ventilation process.

And there are other parameters, of course, such as hemoglobin levels for patients who have experienced bleeding.

And for patients where there is a clinical suspicion of sepsis, we naturally want to be able to measure the relevant sepsis parameters right away – meaning lactate, PCT and CRP – and we don't want to deal with the delay of transporting samples to the central lab.

The same is true for D-dimer and Troponin T.

We have a very large number of immobile patients, so the risk of pulmonary embolism is relatively high.

Thanks to the point-of-care solution, we are able to immediately measure all of the relevant lab parameters that we require for the treatment of our critically ill intensive care patients.

On top, everything is transferred electronically into our patient records.

For me a good day is when we have helped patients to make progress. When we have solved critical situations together as a team and, at the end of the day, we feel like we didn't just fight, but we also made a difference, especially for our patients.
